Bumper plates are essential for people weightlifting for their sport as the weights can be dropped from overhead after you lift them. Not having to control putting them down means that more weight can be lifted. More importantly, it is also means much less injury risk as the lower back usually takes most of the load trying to decelerate and control a heavy weight against gravity.

Best used on a wooden weightlifting platform with strong rubber matting to preserve the life of the bumper plates.
